An Interview With Emeralds OF Corey Adamson

By Kevin Charity /
Corey Adamson is one of the more interesting prospects in the entire Padres system. The Padres signed the Australian-born OF when he was just 17. The Padres gave Adamson a $500,000 bonus back in 2008, in hopes that he could put his impressive athleticism to good use. Adamson has also helped the Perth Heat, of the Australian baseball league, win two consecutive championships.

Adamson started the year with the Fort Wayne Tincaps, and got off to a slow start, hitting .111 in 81 at-bats, with a homer and five RBI’s. He is currently playing at Eugene, and is hitting .242, with one homer, and 11 RBI’s. Adamson even had a three-hit game a few nights ago. Adamson is also among the league leaders with 9 stolen bases. Corey was nice enough to answer a few questions, in between his busy schedule.

Q: Australia is not really considered a hotbed for baseball, at least here in America. But just how popular is the game in Australia?A: “Growing up in Australia, almost everyone plays Tee-ball at some point, but then cricket and Australian football take over, so baseball is not as popular as it should be. However, with the new professional league that has just started, it is beginning to grow, which is great to be involved with.”

Q: Your Father (Tony Adamson) is in the Australian Baseball Hall-of-Fame. What kind of impact has he had on your game?

A: “My Dad has had a huge impact on my game. If he did not play, I probably would have never started playing baseball. He was my coach when I was younger, and even now he knows my swing and mentality more than most people do, so I am always happy to talk with him, or go into the backyard and work on some stuff.”

Short Season A – Corey Adamson, James Brooks, Guy Edmonds

Corey Adamson at bat with Guy Edmonds doing the catching yesterday

Aussie East met Aussie West yesterday in the short season A League when Perth’s Corey Adamson’s Eugene Emeralds travelled to Spokane to take on Sydney’s Guy Edmond’s Indians.

Overall Corey can claim victory. The Emeralds won 4-2 and Corey stole 2 bases on Guy but was cut down by him once. He went 1-3 at the plate.

The Indians would get their only two runs of the ballgame on sacrifice flies. The first came in the bottom of the 2nd when Guy ripped one to deep left center with runners on first and third. Eugene’s left fielder Jeremy Baltz got a great jump and ran it down right as he crashed into the wall. The run came in to score from third but Baltz’s web gem certainly limited the damage and robbed Guy of a hit leaving him with an 0-3 day but a valuable RBI.

James Brooks has been promoted to short season A. He went 1-3 yesterday in Rookie League and is currently hitting .303.

Corey Adamson heats up

Corey Adamson had his best day in pro ball  yesterday when he unleashed a double and home run in his 4-5 day for Eugene in their 5-4 win in 11 innings over Everett.  He added 4RBI to his tally in the process.

Clearly his return to Extended Spring Training had the desired effect – prior to ES he was hitting .111 – since ES he is now hitting .261 and gone 7-21 in his last 4 games..

Update – Corey Adamson, Wilson Lee, Sam Gibbons

Sam Gibbons, GCL Twins,  pitched today giving up 2 walks in 2 innings. Sam got the win and remains 0.00 after 5 innings.
