RRS got his 1st win

James Beresford had his first multi hit game today, going 2-4 including a double and scored a run in New Britain’s 6-5 win over Portland. After 6 games he is hitting .200

Trent Oeltjen is continuing to struggle at the plate going 0-2 yesterday and 0-3 today. After 11 games he is hitting a disappointing .133

Another tough outing for Josh Spence today in the first inning. Buffalo had quickly scored 3 runs and Josh came on with two out and bases loaded. He immediately gave up a double to LF which scored another 3 runs before finishing the inning. He then struck out his only hitter in the 2nd. Buffalo beat Scranton 6-1.

Ryan Rowland-Smith got his first win today coming on in the 9th with the score locked at 2 all. He then threw 3 scoreless and hitless innings, including 2Ks until Pawtucket won it in the 11th with a walk off 3RBI home run giving Ryan a well deserved win.

Stefan Welch scored Altoona’s only run yesterday in their 3-1 loss to Harrisburg. Brought on as a pinch hitter for the pitcher in the 10th he drove an RBI single to CF.

AA – Saupold, Welch

It’s pretty rough when you pitch a career high 8K game and still end up having to take the loss. That’s what happened to Warwick Saupold today when he threw 7 innings allowing 3 runs on 7 hits, including 1HR whilst striking out a personal pro best of 8Ks. Unfortunately his Erie Sea Wolves could not get him enough runs and went down to Reading 3-1. Still a very encouraging outing for Warwick who was named Erie’s “Player of the Game”.

Stefan Welch went 1-3 in Altoona’s 4-0 loss to Harrisburg.

AA – AAA. Oeltjen, Welch

Broke his drought at last

Broke his drought at last

Trent Oeltjen is certainly having a lean time. He went 0-4 today which means he has not had a hit since his 1st game. He is currently 1-14 after 5 games.

Stefan Welch broke his drought today going 2-5 including a 2RBI double in his 1st at bat for Altoona in their 14-6 win over Akron.

AA – Beard, Beresford, Welch

No hits so far for Stefan.

Hits are proving hard to get for our two infielders in AA.

James Beresford got his first for the season today when he went 1-4 in New Britain’s 9-2 win over Harrisburg.

Stefan Welch was 0-3 today and is still to record his first hit after 3 games played.

Hayden Beard has been put on the DL by the Padres.

AA – Beresford, Saupold, Welch

Good debut for Warwick Saupold

Good debut for Warwick Saupold

James Beresford, playing second base, was 0-2, scoring a run and stealing a base in New Britain’s 3-2 loss to Richmond in 11 innings.

Warwick Saupold gave a solid performance in his AA debut as a starter for the Erie SeaWolves in their 5-2 win over Stefan Welch’s Altoona. He threw 5 innings allowing only one hit which just happened to be a 2RBI home run, and a walk whilst striking out 3. He wasn’t the pitcher of record but he would be pretty pleased with that effort.

Stefan went 0-3.

Spring Training – Aussies in action – George, Kandilas, Kennelly, Moylan (dropped), Welch

Peter Moylan is the latest to be sent back to the minors

Peter Moylan is the latest to be sent back to the minors

It’s not been a good week for Aussie potential major leaguers with Travis Blackley and Josh Spence being sent down. Now comes news that the Dodgers have dropped Peter Moylan to the minor leagues. That leaves only Grant Balfour and possibly Liam Hendriks as our representatives in The Show. Disappointing.

A number of minor leaguers got some playing time in the final games of Spring Training today. David Kandilas got a good run with the Rockies going 0-1 and a walk and a run. Both Matt Kennelly and Stefan Welch went 0-2 and rookie Darryl George didn’t get to bat but got to play at third late in the Rays’ game today. This no doubt softened the disappointment he felt when he was unable to crack a place in a full season team and has to return next week to extended spring.

Spring Training – Aussies in action – Moylan, Russell, Welch

Peter Moylan strengthened his case for inclusion in the opening day bull pen for the Dodgers with a 2 up 2 down 5th after coming on with 1 out. The sidearmer got a fly ball and a strike out. Should we start predicting he will make opening day?

Stefan Welch had his second outing with the Pirates today when he came on in the 7th against the Yankees. He ground out and walked in his two plate appearances.

Andrew Russell is getting plenty of work with the Braves at the back end of spring training. He threw a scoreless 9th against the Astros to get his 1st Save. His line reads 1INN, 2H, 0R, 1BB, 1K with a 2.45ERA. In the game Sydney’s Brandon Barnes went 0-2. He had just been named in Houston’s opening day roster (Story to come)

BRADENTON, Fla. — Stefan Welch’s three-run home run with two outs in the eighth inning helped the Pirates stun the Rays in a 6-4 comeback victory on Friday.

Welch, a member of Australia’s World Baseball Classic team, connected off Kirby Yates on his first Grapefruit League at-bat. Welch was one of several players imported from the Pirates’ Minor League camp for the game.

The rally began with Jeff Larish’s two-out double off Dane de la Rosa. Lucas May drew a walk to bring up Welch.

James Beresford; Ryan Searle; Stefan Welch

Stefan Welch

After a somewhat lean August for Stefan Welch September has started well. In his 1st Sept. game he hit a home run and in his 2nd he went 2-5 with 2 doubles, scored 2 runs and had 1RBI.

Ryan Searle threw a solid game for the Daytona Cubs going 6 innings and giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and a walk whilst striking out 4 in the Cubs 3-2 win over Brevard County. As the Cubs were 2-1 down when he was relieved after 6 innings he got a no decision but he would have been happy with the result. His ERA is 3.46 over his last 10 games.

James Beresford had a good day with the bat going 3-4 including a triple and 2RBI in the Rock Cats’ 10-3 win over New Hampshire. He is hitting .258.

Welch stars for Altoona

Third baseman Stefan Welch drew a bases-loaded walk with one down in the ninth to give Altoona the walk-off win, 2-1, over the Akron Aeros today.  The Curve never led all night until Welch walked in the winning run in the ninth inning.  Altoona claimed victory in the ballgame despite being outhit 14-7.

The Curve didn’t put a run on the scoreboard until the eighth when Welch singled in Adalberto Santos from second to tie it at one.

Good to see Stefan being successful today as his production had slipped from .391 in June to .221 this month.
