Redlands Community College’s baseball team were defeated last Thursday as the Cougars kicked off the 2011 NJCAA Region II Championship on a sour note.

Northern Oklahoma College of Enid broke a 2-all tie in the sixth, scoring seven runs off RCC reliever Tyler Hill and two off starter Brock Werdel to cap an 11-2 win.

“We had a bad error in the sixth that ends up leading to seven unearned runs,” said Redlands head coach Matt Newgent.“We just didn’t have anyone step up and stop the bleeding. This game was indicative of our season as a whole. We played well for stretches and then poorly for a stretch.

Redlands struggled at the plate against NOC pitcher Coleman Stephens. The southpaw allowed a walk to Jared Wright in the first inning, but RCC left the runner stranded.

Sam Shipway

The Cougars put two runners on base in the second inning as Sam Moon drew a walk and went to third on a bunt by Sam Shipway, which was booted by Stephens.
Both runners would score two batters later when Petr Zyma squared around to bunt, but then pulled back away from an inside pitch. The throw would get away from NOC catcher Blake Johnson, allowing the runners to cross.
The Cougars were robbed of another runner in the fourth when Shipway dropped down a bunt and then beat out a wide throw to the bag. He was originally ruled safe by the first-base umpire, but then called out after a protest by the NOC coach.
Redlands would leave a total of four runners stranded in the loss.

“We could not get anything going offensively,” said Newgent. “Stephens missed barrels (bat) all day and we could not hit anything solid.”

After only 2 games  Redlands were eliminated from the tournament.
