We did tell you that Cory Adamson’s (above) slow start was nothing to worry about, that he would soon start to make an impression at the plate. Well yesterday he went 1-4, scored a run and an RBI. Today he went even better going 2-4, including a double and scored twice, and so getting a hit in his last 4 games, too soon to call it a streak but heading in the right direction. So after 8 games he’s hitting .300.

Tim Atherton had his 2nd outing for Cedar Rapids today coming on in the 5th with the Rapids in the lead 7-0. Errors in the field behind him made it tough on Tim who finished his one inning giving up 4 hits and 4 runs, but none of them earned whilst Cedar Rapids held off Clinton to win 7-6.

David Kandilas was 0-3 yesterday but hit 1-3 today and scored Modesto’s only run in their 6-1 loss to Lancaster. He is currently hitting .317.

Boss Moanaroa has certainly gone off the boil this week. He went 0-4 both yesterday and today and has now gone hitless in his last 5 games lowering his average to .200.

Corey Adamson (left) appears to have got it altogether in the batters box at last going 3-4 today, making it 5-8 in his last two games. In Ft Wayne’s 9-1 win over Lake County Corey went 3-4, scoring a run and collecting 2RBI raising his average to .273.

Hopefully this year he will hit well enough to stay with the Tin Caps for the whole season. Last year he started with the Tin Caps but struggled at the plate hitting .111 (9-81) in 29 games before being sent back down to extended spring training and did not make it back to Fort Wayne. He played in 66 games with Short-Season A Eugene, hitting .240 with 1HR and 24RBI. He had a .327 on-base percentage and 15 stolen bases.

David Kandilas had a productive day for Modesto as they defeated Lancaster 4-1. He went 2-4 and scored a run. He is hitting .343.

Boss Moanaroa proves that things can change suddenly in this game. After getting a hit in each of his first 6 games he has now gone hitless in his last 3. After going 0-3 in both games of a double header today he is hitting .276.

Corey had a good day with the bat

Ryan Searle came on in the 5th for Daytona with the bases loaded and one out. He did give up a double which allowed two runs to score (not his runs in the stats or course) but then retired the side with no further damage. He then went on threw 3 scoreless innings in what ended up being an 11th inning loss to Clearwater who scored 5 runs in their 11th to win 14-9.

We mentioned that Stefan Welch was struggling with the bat and the next day he broke his drought quite convincingly. We then commented on Corey Adamson’s lack of success at the plate – so today he went out and hit 2-4, scored 2 runs, got 1RBI and stole a base in Ft Wayne’s 9-7 loss to West Michigan. We hope that this is the start for the talented Corey.

Josh Warner was charged with the loss for Lakewood in their 6-0 loss to Hagerstown. He lasted five innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits, while walking two and striking out three.

Boss Moanaroa was 0-3 for Greenville today.

Boss is off to a good start

Boss Moanaroa and David Kandilas are having an impressive start to their respective seasons.

David was only 1-4 today in Modesto’s 3-2 win over the delightfully named Rancho Cucamonga. We say only because he has been making a habit of multi hit games this first week. He also had an RBI and is hitting .435 at present.

Boss is travelling well over at Greenville, going 2-4 with a double, scoring a run and collecting his first RBI in his Team’s 5-4 loss to Hickory. He is hitting .375.

Corey Adamson is struggling a little at Ft Wayne going 0-4 today. He is 1-14 so far but based on the way he hit in the ABL he will soon change all that. It’s only a matter of time.

Tim Atherton (26) threw a scoreless 9th in his season debut

Corey Adamson went 1-2 with a double for the Tincaps in their 8-3 loss to Great Lakes. Corey also collected 3 walks.

Tim Atherton had a memorable start to his season when he threw a scoreless 9th, walking one but striking out three. Tim and the two previous Cedar Rapid pitchers combined to no hit Beloit with the final score being 9-1.

David Kandilas is enjoying his first week of the season going 3-5 today in Modesto’s 5-2 win over the Inland Empire. He hit a triple, had 1RBI and scored 2 runs. After 4 games he has a team leading .474 batting average.

Cameron Lamb is already showing why the Astros grabbed him under the Rule V draft during the off season. In his 2nd outing he picked up the Win when he came on in the 12th with 2 out and 2 on. He quickly finished the inning and threw a scoreless 13th not allowing a hit in his 1.1 innings.

Boss Moanaroa was 1-3 with a double for Greenville in their 5-0 loss to Charleston.

Cameron Lamb off to a good start

Corey Adamson’s Ft Wayne blitzed Great Lakes 13-0 today but Corey didn’t make much of a contribution going 0-5.

David Kandilas is off to a wonderful start to his season going 2-4 today, scoring a run and bringing his Average to .429 after 3 games.

Cameron Lamb had his first outing with his new club (remember he was claimed in the Rule V draft going from the Giants to the Astros). He got the Save today coming on in the 11th inning facing 4 hitters, allowing one hit but no runs.

Boss Moanaroa was 1-3 for the Greenville Drive, collecting a walk and scoring a run in the Drive’s 8-4 win over Charleston.

Ryan Searle started his season with a win when he came on in the 5th with 1 out and 2 on. He immediately finished the inning with 2Ks and then went on to throw 4-2 innings for 2H, 0R, 6K. The Daytona Cubs blanked Brevard County 8-0 and that gave the win to Ryan.

Josh Warner was the starting pitcher for Lakewood today and threw 5 innings for 4H, 2R, 1BB, 7K. He came out with the score 2-1 to Kannapolis who went on to win 5-4.

Boss a Kiwi hit with homer

By JOSH LEESON/Newcastle Herald

TERALBA slugger Boss Moanaroa hopes he can become a pioneer of New Zealand baseball after smashing the nation’s first home run last Friday. The Diamondblacks played their first international as part of the qualifying stage of the World Baseball Classic in New Taipei City, Taiwan, on November 15 against Chinese Taipei.

Chinese Taipei flogged the new boys 10-0 in their debut, but the Kiwis bounced back in their second match against Thailand to win 12-2, which included Moanaroa’s record-setting home run.

‘‘It was a great experience playing in front of thousands of people in the crowd, especially there, the fans are crazy,’’ Moanaroa said yesterday.

‘‘In America the crowds are really big, but in Taiwan it’s just crazy, as the crowds are loud and really go for their home team.’’

Moanaroa, 21, did not realise his homer would be recorded in the New Zealand sporting history books until after the game, but he has kept the game ball to remember the effort.

The Diamondblacks were the only non-ranked country to compete at the event, which is held every four years. New Zealand also beat the Philippines 10-6, before losing again to Chinese Taipei 9-0 to miss a chance to compete in the final stage of the WBC in Taiwan next March.

Despite not advancing, Moanaroa said the performance has boosted the profile of  ‘‘America’s pastime’’ in New Zealand.

‘‘Especially all the little kids who saw us play in the qualifying team, everyone knows we did really well actually,’’ he said.

‘‘If kids saw that hopefully they think, ‘wow, we could play baseball’, so hopefully in the next few years the sport keeps growing and growing and one day maybe we could be one of the best in the world.’’

Moanaroa was born in Newcastle but both his parents grew up in Hamilton, New Zealand, giving him dual citizenship.

Due to the WBC the infielder has missed the opening six games of the Australian Baseball League with the Sydney Blue Sox, but he returned to the team last night against two-time champions Perth Heat at Blacktown International Sportspark.

During the winter Moanaroa played his fourth season in the Boston Red Sox organisation, with class-A ball team Greenville Drive, where he knocked in 49 runs at an average of .262Another three seasons remain on the seven-year contract he signed, and the first baseman is convinced he has the ability to force his way into the major league Red Sox squad.

‘‘I had a solid season and everyone was pretty happy with it, so hopefully next year I can keep moving up,’’ he said.

‘‘They just said I did really well and just to keep progressing and see where it takes you.’’

The Boss man returns

Boss Moanaroa

Sydney have brought in the cavalry for their showdown with two-time defending ABL champions the Perth Heat, headlined by their big-hitting first baseman Boss Moanaroa.

Moanaroa is fresh from a career-defining experience playing in the World Baseball Classic qualifiers in Taiwan, where he blasted the first ever home run for New Zealand in international baseball history.

The 21-year-old grew up in Newcastle and played rugby league, rugby union and softball and was once ranked No.6 in the world in his age group in BMX racing before landing a contract with major league outfit the Boston Red Sox at the age of 16.

He has since toiled away in the American minor leagues, enjoying a successful season with the Red Sox Class-A affiliate the Greenville Drive where he drove in five home runs with a batting average of .262.

Sydney manager Jason Pospishil is delighted to have “the Boss” back along with pitching pair Tim Atherton and Caleb Cuevas for the tough four-game home series with the Heat (5-1), who have started the season in devastating form.

“He’s been an integral part of our team the last two years and we’re really excited to have him back for such an important series,” Pospishil told AAP.

“He’ll be a big presence in the middle fo the batting order for us and by the looks of things he swung the bat pretty well in Taiwan.

“He’s known for his power. He’ll split some time between first base and designated hitter.

“He’s got a power bat. He’ll drive in some big runs for us.

“He’s also got leadership qualities too which is really excited.

“Generally if he plays well, the team responds and plays well also.”

But even a series win over the all-conquering Heat wouldn’t be the most exciting accomplishment for the former cheeky halfback this month.

That would be his long bomb against Thailand, the first by a Team New Zealand batter in history.

“It wasn’t the longest home run, but in terms of the moment it’s certainly the biggest I’ve ever hit in my career,” Moanaroa said.

Moanaroa said he hoped New Zealand’s performance in the tournament, where they won two of four games, would help grow the sport – and predicted more Maori involvement within the next three years.

And like Ross Taylor, the New Zealand captain of Samoan heritage, has done to influence young polynesian athletes to pick up cricket bats, Moanaroa hopes to see more Maori baseballers in the near future.
