Trent Oeltjen signs with the Blue Sox
Sydney’s own Trent Oeltjen will return to the Sydney Blue Sox and the Australian Baseball League for the beginning of the 2013-14 season and the Import Showcase Exhibition Series, at Blacktown International Sportspark, October 26-27th.
The Castle Hill Native will rove the outfield for the Sydney Blue Sox, after spending the US summer with the Los Angeles Angels and their Triple-A affiliate, the Salt Lake Bees.
Oeltjen is set to take the field next weekend for the Sox as they challenge the ABL Imports, a team made up of Major League prospects, from nine different organisations. The two-game exhibition series will serve as a preseason warm up for the Blue Sox 2013-14 ABL season, opening in Perth on November 8th.
The lefty Oeltjen made 12 Major League appearances for the Angels this year, hitting .375 with one home run. Spending the majority of the 2013 season with Salt Lake, Trent hit .255 in 99 games. The 30-year-old also drove in 49 runs, and blasted 30 doubles. Despite struggling early on, (he hit just .167 in April) Oeltjen warmed up to go .405 after the All-Star break.
Oeltjen was signed by the Minnesota Twins in 2001 where he played for 7 years. Since late 2007 the Australian has been contracted with the Milwaukee Brewers, Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Oeltjen was signed as a free agent by the Los Angeles Angels on November 15, 2012 to a one-year deal. In his 13 years of professional baseball experience, Oeltjen holds a career average of .295 and has made 104 Major League appearances, with an average of .301. Trent was also a member of the 2004 Australian Olympic Team, who won a silver medal in Athens.
“It’s great to have Trent back” commented Blue Sox manager Jason Pospishil, “No doubt he’s going to add some offensive power and valuable experience to the young guys on team. He will be a fantastic asset for Sydney and for the game of baseball in Australia.”
Trent and the Blue Sox will host exhibition games next weekend, with three games, October 25th, 26th & 27th. Friday night will feature a battle against the State League All-Stars, followed by the International Prospect Showcase on Saturday (26th) and Sunday (27th).
The two Import Showcase contests, on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday 1:30 p.m. will feature Major League prospects including four import players who have joined the Blue Sox for the summer, from the White Sox, Diamondbacks, Pirates and Tigers. All games will be held at Blue Sox Stadium, at Blacktown International Sportspark and will be broadcast on Triple H 100.1 FM and streamed online at freezone.iinet.net.au.
The Sydney Blue Sox affiliated Import staff include Keon Broxton from the Arizona Diamondbacks, Danny Arribas from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Jacob May and Joey DeMichele from the Chicago White Sox and Dean Green from the Detroit Tigers.
Oeltjen and the US Imports will join a strong Sydney lineup that has made the playoffs every year of the new ABL. The new Australian Baseball League will begin it’s fourth season this year, while the Blue Sox will host the Canberra Cavalry in their Opening Day series at Blue Sox Stadium, November 8-10th.
