Liam Hendriks – hopefully I’ll be back sometime shortly.

By John Shipley

The Twins sent right-hander Liam Hendriks to Class AAA Rochester after their 5-2 loss to the Mariners on Sunday, May 6, officially clearing a spot on the 25-man active roster for lefty Scott Diamond, who will start against the Angels on Tuesday at Target Field.

Hendriks, the Twins’ 2011 minor league pitcher of the year, was 0-2 with a 9.00 earned-run average in four starts after earning a starting job in spring training. Acting manager Scott Ullger said Hendriks needs to regain control of his fastball and start attacking hitters the way he did this spring. The pitcher agreed.

“I started to get away from my strengths and tried to get away from hitters, which I’ve never done in my career,” Hendriks said. “I’ll go back down there and try to find what got me here. I’m fine with confidence, and I’m feeling like I’m strong and feeling like I can go out there and beat people, it’s just I’m going about it the wrong way.

“So it’s just about going down there and getting my head straight, and hopefully I’ll be back sometime shortly.
